Naomi’s Story

I got my first Hormonal IUD 2 months before I turned 19. Getting it in was the most painful experience I’ve even had. It felt like someone blew my up with air and I couldn’t breath. As soon as I left I had severe pain and heavy bleeding to the point where I couldn’t do anything but lay in bed and go to the washroom. I was changing super pads every 10-20 minutes. I was nauseous and spent a week like that. (Had to call in sick) I bled everyday for almost a whole 2 years with maybe 2 days off every 3 months if lucky. When I found my new doctor he immediately ordered an ultrasound even though I had had one 2 weeks after insertion to make sure placement was correct. It turned out that my IUD was stuck holding my cervix open and had been like that since my last ultrasound but they had missed it. I immediately had it taken out and they put a new one in. I’ve had this one almost a year but still with the same bleeding problem. I started to think back to signs and have realized how much anxiety, depression, and severe mood swings that this has caused. It’s like I’m two different people. I never used to get a period symptom and now I get severe cramping, back pain, headaches, nausea, and mood swings. I’ve also gain 50lbs. I’m getting my IUD removed and hope to see improvement without birth control as I let my body reset. If you have any symptoms don’t just think it’s in your head. You know your body and it is important to listen to it.
